St. Luke’s for the past twelve years has supported food ministries in downtown Denison. Like many downtown areas, Denison has a number of low to moderate income residents who cling to downtown living due to costs. Moreover, the downtown area has limited grocery store options. Many of our downtown residents are transportation challenged. The parish established a Food Pantry that operates 20 hours a week providing groceries. Also, on Saturday evenings, they offer a cooked meal to all. These efforts reduce the food insecurity of our downtown residents and homeless population.
During 2024, the Food Pantry was open for 144 days and provided meals for 2,005 individuals. They received financial and volunteer support from parishioners and food donations from the Boy Scouts, St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, and Share Ministries. In 2023 they provided meals for 2332 individuals, and in 2022, provided meals and food to 1,186 individuals.
They have been providing a hot meal weekly, but are closing that program due to a “soup kitchen” opening. They will focus on their food pantry.
Additionally, they host Boy Scout Troop 403 and Alcoholics Anonymous in their parish all.
